Active Environmental was appointed as Demolition Contractor by JJ Rhatigan to complete the demolition and disposal of the Cannon Street and St Swithins Lane project.
Asbestos removal was conducted as per demolition/refurbishment survey report, soft strip of all internal and external fittings and linings, demolition top down to basement slab, removal of basement slab and reduce level dig of two seven storey office buildings adjacent each other.
Works involved the installation of temporary works to support one retained façade of the original second building and also for basement support as the buildings were removed piece by piece.
The works were made difficult by the position of the buildings being surrounded by operating office and commercial properties, busy walkways and Cannon Street Station. All works were conducted within the confines of the building footprint by a combination of both manual labour and small-scale machinery including remote demolition.
As works progressed challenges were overcome such as unidentified asbestos materials within the structure of the buildings, varying slab thicknesses, archaeological finds, noise restrictions, adjusted temporary works designs, and discovering voids under supporting walls. A good relationship was accomplished with the client site team to ensure this difficult project was completed in a safe and methodical manner.
The project was worth £1.1 million and proceeded from July 2016 to August 2017.
